During this unit I was asked to
carry some research into existing advertisements to get an idea of how other
advertisement operates. This also allowed me to develop my understanding the
codes and conventions used within an advertisement. After looking and researching
I joined a group to plan, prepare and produce an advertisement for our product
choice. This being "Zeus Sport" Energy Drink.
The use of this evaluation will outline the benefits, problems and
outcomes of this project. I will also be including some of the feedback gained
from the general public if I were to product a similar product in the future
and how I would aim to do so.
My group worked effectively during the planning process for the
advertisement unit. We as a group separated different tasks between us to
different member of our group. We also made sure that the way we worked allowed
good organisation and we did this by setting out deadlines for our project in
order to get things done but also allow the project meet its overall deadline.
This helped our group as it meant that we were able to produce good quality
work as time had been allocated so that we are able to not rush aspects within
the planning.
In terms of the benefits that came from the use of the use of
planning is that it means that we are able to set things our in advance, it
allowed us to be able to set out a budget, this is so important for use as it
means that we are aware of ways to manage finance and allowed finance to be
sorted out in the different departments so that we are able to not overspend
and lead to financial problems for our advertisement. In addition to that it
means that we as a group became more flexible in spending as we would know how
to spend our money from the limits set out.
One weakness within our planning is that we didn't think much
about the wide range of problems that could arise from the production. For
example in the diary log their is an issue of one team member not being in
therefore meaning that we had to redraft the logo and therefore took up time.
Also mistakes in the filming meant that we had to re-film scenes. This could
have been prevented by setting up an additional factor where this aspects are
too be taken in account. As a group we did not face major problems however
slight hitches as mentioned earlier on. From what happened it did not have a
great impact as our deadlines set allowed us to find a method in keeping up as
the deadline was made to a tight schedule so when this took place within our
planning it did not affect us just allowed us to overcome the issue.
For the production of our advertisement, did not face major
difficulties however there were a few small problems throughout the process.
This being that when recording we had to re-shot some scenes from simple errors
in the costumes used and one individual wearing a different colour top for the
shots. This meant re-shooting which put a strain on the group as it was tedious
to re-shoot however it did not affect our group meeting the overall deadline.
The filming as a group went well in the terms that everyone
pitched in and made it to the recording sessions. The list of equipment for our
pre-production meant that the production was more organised. Within our
recording we insured that we used a wide range of camera angles to express or
establish factors within our advertisement to allow the interest of individuals
to be maintained. We used long shots to establish the atmosphere and setting of
the production, this also helped create the competitive mood we were aiming
for. We also insured that we included mid-shots to insure that the viewers are
able to acknowledge for example the two drinks that the individuals are
drinking. In addition to this the use of close ups also included within our
production to show the emotions of the characters. For our group to be able to
use the different camera angles is a great advantage to our production as it
also means that the use of the camera angles provide more meaning to the advert
we are portraying. This helps our production in being more realistic, we also
insured from our pre production work when looking at the codes and conventions
that we incorporate it within our production. We did this very well as we
insured that as a group we split the roles and divide it so that the recording
could go smoothly. We used our pre production work to help our recording.
Some of the issues within our production did take place, however
we as a group overcame them, some more than others. However we managed to
complete the advertisement. In terms of the production of our advert as a
whole, I would say that it was a great and that we produced it too a good
standard of level.
This area within Unit 1 will look at the
different aspects of my pre production for the advertisement unit 30. The
documentation is as follows:
Treatment Our advert promotes the energy drinkZEUS Sport.
What defines our product is that it
is an all-natural stimulant. It will include ingredients as guana and Caffeine.
This will allow our product to differentiate in contrast to other energy
drinks. We will be providing the options for individuals to be able to purchase
either a can or a bottle depending on their interest. This will insure that our
product is able to reach the consumers requirements.
Our target market for Zeus Sport will
be mainly focused on individuals who regularly participate in sport or
individuals who just want to purchase a drink. We will be targeting to both
male and female consumers. The age group that we will be targeting towards is
from 13 and older.
The advert will be a realist
narrative and will focus on two characters, this being Gift and Daniel. The
advertisement will include persuasive techniques; we will do this to insure
that we are able to gain the interest of our consumers. We will do this by the
use of a slogan or even a jingle. Our group slogan for the product will be “live
it longer… the extension energy drink” we have decided to use this as it
supports our TV advertising in terms of Gift and Daniel’s performance when
consuming either water or Zeus Sport.
The price that we have set for our
product is £1.60, the product will appear in many supermarkets. Our decision to
air our TV advertising will be on Sky and Sky Sports. The
period of time that it will air at 5pm and onwards. Our production will be at
an affordable budget, it will consist of only two characters, and we will only
be using one camera.
StoryBoard
Beginning of advertisement:
From this stage the story-board looks onto the individuals drinking the ZEUS energy drink or water and also preparing to run.
We are now going to look at the storyboard when the actors will then be running after consuming either Water or Zeus Energy Drink as shown below:
From this stage the last image for our storyboard is the finishing line and one actors overcoming the other one as shown below:
Moodboard
The mood board
focuses mainly on different sports and running, mainly a presentation of a
competition. This mainly looks at our theme for the product as it looks into
our product and our synopsis in getting one of the characters to be faster than
the other.
Logo
Our decided logo is shown below for the group:
Script
For our production our script is very simple as it does not include much speaking or narrative.
Music begins
Gift and Daniel are preparing to run on the tracks, Gift drinks the water whereas Daniel drinks the Zeus sport energy drink. They take their positions and a countdown to 5 is made, after that the race begins. The race starts with Gift running at a steady speed as daniel, suddenly daniel is overcoming Gift. He reaches the final line and throws his arms up in surprise and delight. While Gift shows his disappointment by placing his hand on his head.
(The product then appears and is moved from the left hand corner to the middle of the table.) Narrator: Live it longer .... Zeus the energy drink Our script is very simple as we are placing more attention on the imagery and the product itself, using upbeat music to set the tension of the race and drawing users in with the one us of speech to make the advertisement more memorable to the audience.
Crew The size of our team is not very big, it consists of four individuals including myself. These individuals are:
Henna – Editing, risk assessment, diary log, synopsis, actor profiles, budget plan, recce photos of location and market research
Bahno – Editing, Treatment, locations, prop list, casting photographs and justifications, storyboard, recce photos of location and market research
Gift – Actors, Treatment
Daniel – Actor
Risk Assessments
For our
production we needed to make sure that when recording that we do take care or
aware of any risks that could arise and how to overcome them. We did this by
insuring that we identified the different hazards as shown above this being our
equipment, weather and also the general public.
Hazard
Cause of Harm
Likelihood of Event
Subject to Harm
How Much Harm
Resolution
Football/
Equipment
Football
or equipment on field at the time of shoot
Unlikely,
as there will only be two male footballers on the set at the time and the
advert consists of stunts which do not require passing or kicking the
football to one another.
Footballers,
camerawomen and crew members
Minor
bump
Make
sure the footballers are well behaved at all times.
Weather
Snow,
ice, hail, rain or slippery conditions in bad weather
Unlikely,
because we are in the British Summer Time season where bad weather is not
expected.

Meetings Zeus Sport (Initial Ideas/overall decision)
Date 08/03/2013
Time 10.00 – 11.00
Location: Room 203
Head of Meeting: Bahno Mirzad & Hennah
Confidentiality: Public
1. Status of upcoming operational Review
Bahno Mirzad passed out copies of the brief stating the initial ideas within the group for each. Individuals within the group were made clear of what we are aiming to and what the unit consisted of us.
2. Discuss initial ideas gathered as a group/ overall decision
Hennah discussed her initial idea to the group, followed by this gift then explained his idea. Bahno also added in her initial idea. Finally Daniel went through his idea. All ideas were explored with both advantages and disadvantages.
The chairperson requested a breakdown of how the group will decide on the overall decision and from this point the group selected to use elements from each idea but have the theme sports based.
Action: To think of how to expand this theme to one main idea.
3. Make adjustments to what is necessary
As a group we discussed any improvements adjustment needed for the discussion within our group. We identified none so we moved onto setting actions for the next meeting.
Actions:
Hennah - Decide and explore different areas of sports section that we could narrow our overall decision to.
Bahno - Look at the advantages and disadvantages of the choices that Hennah has looked into.
Gift - Explore on the name that we should have for a sport themed idea
Daniel - Think of how the logo within our production should look like after gift provides a name to our group.
The type of
production for the unit I am looking at is a video. It is a video for an
advertisement this being for ZEUS Sport, which is a energy drink. What defines
our product is that it is an all-natural stimulant. It will include ingredients
as guana and Caffeine. This will allow our product to differentiate in contrast
to other energy drinks. We will be providing the options for individuals to be
able to purchase either a can or a bottle depending on their interest. This
will insure that our product is able to reach the consumers requirements.
Our target
market for Zeus Sport will be mainly focused on individuals who regularly
participate in sport or individuals who just want to purchase a drink. We will
be targeting to both male and female consumers. The age group that we will be
targeting towards is from 13 and older. The advert
will be a realist narrative and will focus on two characters, this being Gift
and Daniel. The advertisement will include persuasive techniques; we will do
this to insure that we are able to gain the interest of our consumers. We will
do this by the use of a slogan or even a jingle. Our group slogan for the
product will be “live it longer… the extension energy drink” we have decided to
use this as it supports our TV advertising in terms of Gift and Daniel’s
performance when consuming either water or Zeus Sport.
The price
that we have set for our product is £1.60, the product will appear in many
supermarkets.
Codes and Conventions of advertising The codes and conventions of advertising, I have identified this for my own production so that I am able to have a better understanding in how to present our advertisement. Codes and conventions are used in many adverts, this codes can be looked at in four different sections, it is called SWAT codes. This standing for the following:
S- Symbolic
W- Written
A- Audio
T - Technical
You will find that this type of conventions are used in a wide range of advertisements. It is also used within programmes and films. These techniques are portrayed in many different ways.
Symbolic, "serving as a symbol of something" is how it is defined. This can be looked at in terms of the presentation of an individual, or even an object, setting. The use of body language or even clothing and colour. These aspects can be looked in terms of symbolising something. For example the advert 1 Million Paco Rabanne
When looking at the advertisement you are able to see that the man in the suit is representing money and the use of cars, diamonds are also supporting it. This is a method of symbolising it is using clothing, object and also the use of body language. By the guy clicking his fingers he is showing not only his wealth but also power. This immediately makes the audience aware of his status, by using this male to represent wealth and power also then symbolises on the product itself. The perfume and its style, by having a this use of imagery reflects and symbolises the product as the use of gold outline for the product symbolises wealth and power and reminds the audience of gold.
Written, this includes aspects such as text on the screen, headings, captions, speech bubbles and language styles. An example of this convention is the use of Asda advertisement and the use of written information to gain the audience's interest.
It uses a chart with the use of text and number to show the difference between the product and how cheaper the products are in each store. And then uses pricings of "50p" to show the products and how cheap they are. The use of doing so makes the products stand out and the company ASDA gain more recognition as it is contrasting it to other businesses through the use of their names.
Audio, this includes any sounds used in an advert or film such as sound, dialogue, music and voiceover. You are able to see that the use in audio is very effective in ads for a simple reason as it allows attention and focus to be made on a specific thing, this usually being the service or product on offer. In addition to this makes what is shown more interesting and attracts the viewers and in some sense provide them better idea and clue of what it going to happen.
A good example of using audio is the Boots advert for "Here come the girls", the use of having the choice of a popular song to sell the products is very effective as it becomes very memorable and in some cases mean that whenever next hearing the song you will remember the advert for boots.
Looking at this advertisement the use of the music makes the advertisement more popular, this is supported by the use of music choice, here comes the girls. It fits in well with the advert as the products shown are mainly at a target market of girls. For the music fitting in well with the product and advert makes it more memorable therefore meaning that it will have more impact on the audience.
Finally the use of technical codes, this side of the advertisement includes the different camera techniques, framing, camera angles, shots, the use of lighting, depth of field, exposure and so on. All these aspects are a big part to an advertisement. The use of the different camera angles can be a great method in helping to add expression, establishing shots and so on. In addition to this, they can be used to show different perspective of a scene and can be a method in showing more to the viewers.
In terms of the lighting used it is a great method in being able to create a atmosphere but also a mood to the advert. Whereas the use of sound can used whenever and can also emphasis the imagery presented. The use of sound can help create more awareness of the product and its features.
A good example of the use of camera angles is from the advertisement for Pepsi
This advert is a good example of using different camera angles and shots, there are so many used throughout the clips showing different movement for the character.
There is the use of long shots as shown below:
This is a great method in establishing the setting for the advertisement and a great method in setting up the atmosphere for the Pepsi advertisement. The use of long shots are used throughout the advertisement to establish shots and so different scenes and new areas of where the character goes to for example another being the change in scene this being to the door where the kid knocks on. This is use of long shots and some other wide shots within the advertisement are used to set location.
There is use of close up and extreme close ups, this is to show expression and more concentration to what the character is doing within the advertisement. There is also use of mid shots as shown below:
Looking at this mid shot within the advertisement can be used to express the character movement and gives a clear view of what is happening. At this point the use of the mid shot allow a different to be shown from the character at a young age to now being older age.
The codes and Conventions that we as a group will be using for our advertisement is as follows:
Symbolic, we will use the use of clothing to represent the product. This being the use of the sports kit for the actors to wear, this will help present the sport element to our product Zeus Sport energy drink.
In terms of written we will use number such as 5,4,3,2,1 to show individuals the competition and the starting. This will help create the fast beat element to the advertisement. Can help also support our advertisement as the product will help when doing sport or activities.
Audio, the use of having music within our production will help complements the fast beat within our advertisement for the sport drink and makes it more dramatic for users.
Technical, finally for the use of camera angles, we will use a wide range of angles to establish our shots to showing expression. We will use long shots to establish the start of the race and set the scene for where the two actors will be this being at the sport facilities. For the mid shots we will concentrate on the two actors drinking the products water and our Zeus product. and finally we will use extreme close ups/ Close ups to establish the reactions that the actors have to winning or losing. This will then end with a close up of the product being shown to viewers this being Zeus product. The use of having this towards the end makes the focus last on the product.
Finance The use of finance is very important, especially to our group. Finance controls what goes in and out of Zeus Sport this will then enable good investment decisions to take place. Finance
records all the money that is spent so that Zeus sport know how much
profit or loss they as a business are producing in each department of the
organisation. The use of finance will allow Zeus Sport to have a good
understanding in how much will be required in order to carry out the production for the advertisement.
Finance has an impact on the business Zeus Sport as when setting up the production for the advertisement, I will need the money to be able to
finance Zeus Sport. This including being able to buy the equipment and materials for the
product and this is where finance come in and the allocated budget amount.
As a group we could possibly look into getting a grant to cover our costs, this being for example UK business funding centre. This where you can receive funding for advertising and marketing. For our group this can be a vital factor to help us advertise our product Zeus Sport and create awareness for it.
There are different methods of funding but one method can be from the UK business funding centre. If a business who wanted to market and advertise their product wanted to seek funding this can be done by simple completing this form shown below:
Budget Budgeting, this will
allow Zeus Sport to be able to identify what our fixed and variable cost
are and how we will need to insure that we are controlling our expenditure. Budgeting will also allow more structure within the
business. Using budgeting will spread out the money that the Zeus Sport has in
different departments helping prevent the amount of the financial problems that
the business Zeus Sport can face.

This our
budget for our production, looking at this you can see that we have high costs
however will be affordable to cover. The budget looks at the different
wages that we will be paying our actors and also the props that we will need to
get in addition to other costs.
Equipment and Costs
My budget outlines an overall costing, this including a wide
range of different elements; it also consists of high amount of quantity for
products at purchase. In terms at looking at the individual costs for the
product I am able to see that my costs for equipment will be the following:
Camera: Sony DSR P1D175 DVCAM Video cameras and camcorder (£2,079.00)
This is the camera that our group will be purchasing, in order to get our production looking to a good standard of quality having a these types of camera will help aid that. The price of this product is £2,079.00.
We also decided that for our camera a necessity would be the SD cards needed, this being that we decided to get an SD card supporting 8GB so that we could film a lot of footage. In addition to this the pricing for the SD card and its memory amount is at an affordable pricing for our group.
Our planning pre production and post production in
company advertisement video is called Zeus Sports.
Our planning production will take place in schools, it will be mainly
the sport facilities as we are focusing on the sport
elements within our advertisement. We as a group have decided on
going to areas such as the Astro-truf, Gym facilities, Tennis courts and may
even considering some filming in the changing rooms to show individuals
preparing to get ready for the competition. Looking at this area for our
production I am able to identify that there will be no major
financial costs that my group will need to cover as it is not free of charge
and provided to us by the school. We will just need to go and gain permission
from the teacher for the time we want to record to limit disturbance in other
lessons that may be going on and so that we are able to gain a time where it is
available without anything going on.
For our decision in opting towards facilities, for a more professional look we
as a group could also consider different types of sports facilities that we
could use. We could use the Alan Higgs Centre as one place to shoot our
production. However if doing so we would need to take into consideration the
costs and permission that will be required from us.
The Alan Higgs
Centre has is a wide range of facilities that are on offer for us to be able to
use. We as a group will also need to insure that we think about the cost of
travelling as this is far away from our school, therefore money will need to be
contributed to getting their and coming back to school. http://www.covsf.com/our-centres/the-alan-higgs-centre.html
From my research into the business I have
identified the different pricing that we will be required from our group when
wanting to use the facilities. The one we would select is the sport hall or the
outdoor football. This pricing will range from £44.00 for the sports hall and
£47.50 for the outdoor football this being half the pitch.
From the two options available I am able to see that one is less costly than
the other and from both options they both provide very excellent facilities.
Therefore looking at the overall decision for our group. Opting for the Sidney
Stringer facilities will be more beneficial to use and will provide us with the
same near professional standards.
Crew
The size of
our team is not very big, it consists of four individuals including myself.
These individuals are:
Henna – Editing, risk assessment, diary log,
synopsis, actor profiles, budget plan, recce photos of location and market
research
Bahno – Editing, Treatment, locations, prop list, casting photographs and
justifications, storyboard, recce photos of location and market research
Gift – Actors, Treatment Daniel – Actors
Actor Profiles
For two of our crew members, them taking part in the roles of acting. We required an acting profile profile. This information shows that they are very suitable for the roles that they are taking on board. This is shown below for both Gift and Daniel :
GIFT MUSA Profile
For our advert we needed to hire two professional looking footballers to take part in a series of drills and runs and to promote our energy drink. Hence we decided to choose Gift Musa to act as one of the two professional footballers for our advert.
Name: GIFT MUSA
Role: Football/Sportsman
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Information: GIFT MUSA is to act the role of a professional footballer during training sessions. For this Gift will need to be able to dribble the ball around the cones well, be able to sprint as well as do many other training drills for our advert. We have chosen Gift because he has background knowledge on sport as he is doing BTEC Sports at Level 3. We believe that Gift is a suitable character for this role because he will be able to complete the drills in a professional manner hence making the advert look professional also.
Hobbies & Interests:

As Daniel does Performing Arts he will be able to act in a proper professional manner during the shoot.
Hobbies & Interests:
o Busking
o Drama & acting
o Sports
o Going out
o Socialising
Production and Post Production Equipment I am going to look at the
equipment that will be require for our production, this being for both the
production process and the post post production.
Production
List:
I will
require a camera so that we as a group are able to gain the
footage that is required for our advertisement
Microphone, will be needed in order to record a voiceover for
the advertisement.
Tripod, this will be used for the long shots and is great
to make the advertisement more professional.
Post Production List:
Computer, this is the hardware that I will require in order
to edit my advertisement. The specific computer that we will be using will be
the apple macs.
Adobe Premiere Pro, will be what the group will use in order to edit
the video and sound that is required for the advertisement.
Fireworks, we will be using this to create any graphics. An
example would be to create our logo for our advertising unit.
Photoshop, this is where we will refine any images or create
any graphics for example our logo or just any images that we may decide to use
within our advertising.
Codes of Practice
When
producing the advertisement for the product Zeus Sport, our group will need to
take in account the codes of practice. This including the rules and
regulations. Zeus Sport will need to insure that they are following Ofcom Rules
for the advertisement and also the ASA.
In terms of ofcom, I have identified that it is
public body, it regulates all media which is broadcasted to the general public.
This for example being Radio, TV and so on. Ofcom sets out standards which
broadcasters must comply with, Ofcom protects the general public from
Scams and any harm that can result from the advertisement. In relation to Zeus
Sport I will need to make sure that comply with the standards set out to
restrict the problems that can arise.
The Ofcom rules include and are based to insure that the board are for example
protecting under eighteens, criminal activity, harm and offence, difference of
views and opinions, religious services and so on.
An example of ofcom doing and helping the general public, is shown below in the
article:
Looking at this above
you are able to see that Ofcom purpose is support the audience from any harm
and this is shown as the article looks at how ofcom are asking the
advertising bodies to review the rules in order to limit the exposure of TV
alcohol advertising.
The board makes sure that on public service channels that advertising used does
not exceed an average of seven minutes per hour for every hour. Furthermore to
this they insure that other channels do not exceed an average of nine minutes
of television advertising for every hour of broadcasting.
The types of advertisements that go up on channels are also affected by whom
may be viewing, in the article it looks at restricting the exposure of alcohol
adverts to young children. This for example being what can be screened on TV
before 9pm watershed. These codes are beneficial as they help protect
young children.
The complaints gained are then judged by the use of the broadcasting codes.
These rules not only cover harm and offence, but also some other
areas. This being accuracy, sponsorship, impartiality and so on.
If Ofcom find a programme has broken these rules then it will be found in
breach of code and Ofcom will then decide upon this decision. In some of
the serious cases the board may need to serious action in for example fining
the broadcaster. This is one of the main reasons that Zeus Sport will need
to insure that they comply with the regulations to insure that they
do not face consequences that could lead to potential failure for our
group.
ASA (Advertising
Standards Agency)
The ASA are set out law for advertisers, agencies and media owners to follow.
The ASA include general rules that include the following:
Advertising must be responsible
Must not mislead, or offend
Specific rules are set to cover
advertising for children

Meetings As a group we had many meetings this is one example of our meetings and how they are conducted:
Minutes for Meeting
Meetings Zeus
Sport (Initial Ideas/overall decision)
Date 08/03/2013
Time 10.00
– 11.00
Location: Room
203
Head of Meeting: Bahno Mirzad & Hennah
Confidentiality: Public
1. Status of upcoming operational Review
Bahno Mirzad passed out copies of the brief stating the initial ideas within
the group for each. Individuals within the group were made clear of what we are
aiming to and what the unit consisted of us.
2. Discuss initial ideas gathered as a group/
overall decision
Hennah discussed her initial idea to the group, followed by this gift then explained
his idea. Bahno also added in her initial idea. Finally Daniel went through his
idea. All ideas were explored with both advantages and disadvantages.
The
chairperson requested a breakdown of how the group will decide on the overall decision
and from this point the group selected to use elements from each idea but have
the theme sports based.
Action: To think of how to expand this theme
to one main idea.
3. Make adjustments to what is necessary
As
a group we discussed any improvements adjustment needed for the discussion
within our group. We identified none so we moved onto setting actions for the
next meeting.
Actions:
Hennah
- Decide and explore different areas of sports section that we could narrow our
overall decision to.
Bahno
- Look at the advantages and disadvantages of the choices that Hennah has
looked into.
Gift
- Explore on the name that we should have for a sport themed idea
Daniel
- Think of how the logo within our production should look like after gift
provides a name to our group.
Props & Costumes
Below are
the following props and costumes, which we will be using within our production.
As you are able to see that the
first image is our product this being the Zeus drinks, we will include this
within our production to allow our advertisement to focus on what we are
selling and promoting.
We will include a football &
cones within our production so that we can make clear the product is an energy
drink that we will be providing.
Within our production we also
will be including the water bottle to allow the contrast of how well our
product work in contrast to another. This will give more power to the product
that we are offering.
The kit will be included to allow
the individuals to fit in well with the theme of the sport drink.
For the
costumes looking closely at the actors I will use the following things this being the KIT this will help blend in with the atmosphere and put across the sporting elements within our production. Furthermore to this I will make sure that the costume worn is a football kit or simple sportswear. The main reason for this is so that it can fit in well with the mis-en-scene that our group is presenting within the advertisement.
Overall Location Decision
Sidney stringer school is where we will be gaining most of our footage
from, we will be asking many young individuals in our school for their views.
Sidney
Stringer Academy
One of the areas we decided to record in was in
School, this being that the sport facilities in school were at a satisfactory
level to what we were looking for and a great place for us to record our TV
advertisement. We will mainly be recording in the sport facilities area of the
school as our advertising is based on the Zeus Sport drink therefore
complementing well the area we have selected.
This being
for example from the image above the sport facilities so that we are able to
film our production, this setting will help complement the product.
